I organized some years ago one race named “The Great Spirit Race” like Prohibition Style (Suuri Pirtukeikka in Finnish) we transported “500 litres spirit” from Helsinki coast to Rovaniemi. The route consisted 12 legs about 80-100 km per each. A Ford club members were able to drive one or more legs as they feld like. It was carried out as a relay race, “spirit cans” were as a baton, which moved from car to car and at least all of them were transported to Rovaniemi. Driving time was 24 hours + sleeping time in Jacobstad (Pietarsaari) in western coast , It was very nice and funny happening.

Bilderna är från ett A-Ford Rally på Gotland där gästfriheten stod högt på dagordningen.
Rallyslingan var som vi säger, lagom lång och kontrollerna både av lokal som internationell karaktär .
Jag rekommenderar starkt att ni gör ett längre besök på Gotland. Ön är mycket speciell med skiftande landskap från bördiga ängar, tät skog och kala vidder.

The pictures are from an A Ford Rally Gotland and the hospitality and joy was high on the agenda.
The Rally tour was as we say, just the right length and controls ofboth local and international touch.
I strongly recommend that you make a visit to the island. The island is special with its landscape of ……………………………………………………………. green meadows, forests and nice coast line.

This Model A was imported from the US. One of the first time we drove it in Sweden we were near to crash. The steering wheel came loose !!! It had a woodruff key from the water pump instead of the original one. The key was covered with several layers of aluminum folio and then was the steering wheel pressed in place. As we drive the car and turned left the did go straight on….. terrible. Felt like driving a Tivoli car. The steering wheel just spun. Happily the brakes were good. Why does anyone “restore” a car like that and create danger for someone else? We managed to lift the car and with help move the wheels so we got off the road.
After that we always double check everything we not have made in our garage.
Today this car is in a very good shape. Maybe we can buy it back ?
I do like those Coupes !

This car is one the Model A´s that has been in my focus since I first saw it in Västerås in Sweden many years ago.
Herbert Moitzi was the owner and I did follow his restoration of the car rather closely. It was found at an auction with a 1930 engine mounted in the car.
The original motor was to be seen beside the car. The 189 engine was then sent for restoration and the 1930 engine was replaced.
As the body came off, the chassis number was very clear and easy to read. The engine number and frame number was the same, A189.

I had lots of contacts with Doc Kalinka and Fred Gooding to find out how it was possible that a early series car had found its way to Sweden late 1927.
First date of registration in Sweden was early in Mars 1928 ! Calculate backwards and with minimum of 30 days of transport over the ocean + all handling give us the fact that the car must have been sent from the US already late 1927. That is even earlier than most dealers in the US. Most dealers did not even have a car for display !
I know when the first load of Model A´s did arrive to Denmark for distribution to Sweden- Norway and Finland. That info can be found under the Model A section here at Netclassics Model A site.

On the same boat were Model A´s with 4 digit engine numbers ! We have to look more into that and study the Danish newspaper ads with articles from the first Model A arrival in Denmark that you also can find at Netclassics site.

One part on the very early Model A´s that is special (among others) is the rear light…. look at the pictures of one extremely rare rear lamp that the very first Model A series supposed to have….I still have the light lying at my desk here in Sweden….Notice the special Ford Logo on top !

I still have the original one sawed among my other parts. It is marked with A 189 so I will not mix it up with other Model A parts

A-Ford Pic Up 1930

 

This Model A was a very nice and good driver and I used it rather much in the heavy trafic in the center of Stockholm. It never failed. Brakes were like modern car brakes.

Evelyn Hedstroem did send us the picture of her Phaeton 1928. it was restored in 1960 and has been is the same condition since then. Lovely to drive and works perfectly every year. Quite gearbox and smooth engine.
Starts up directly every spring. Very nice driver.

Svensktillverkad hytt av MODINS.
En bil som gick i princip ljudlöst trots att motorn inte var renoverad.
A-Fordmotorn satt original i en A-Ford från Ingarö som byggdes om med Taunus motor,
fram- och bakaxel samt hela transmissionen. Om jag inte minns fel så fick den också automatlåda.
A-Motorn var slö uppgav tidigare ägare till motorn men allt var så enkelt som ett tändinställningsfel.
Allt för mycket lågtändning gav en svag motor. Med rätt justering gjorde bilen lätt 90 km/h
Denna bil byggdes upp igen av Erik Hargeby Gotland. Stor tack Erik för all proffshjälp vänner emellan.

Ford A Pic Up 1930 USA-kaross och flak.
Importerades för många år sedan av Netclassics från USA med mycket god hjälp av Doc Kalinka som är en av USA.s främsta experter på A-Ford. Denna bil var sliten men av någon outgrundlig anledning så gick den helt perfekt.
Bromsarna var outstanding , kändes som hydraulbromsar. Hytten är trång och oljedoften märkbar men vad gör det när man har roligt hela tiden när man kör med den.
Jämfört med den gröna Pic Upen ovan så är de helt olika i uppbyggnad. Flaken skiljer mycket där den Amerikanska bilen har ett betydligt mindre och lägre flak. Den Amerikanska hytten var mycket ovanlig i Sverige då import av bilar med hytt hade helt andra importavgifter än ett chassie med torped.
Bilden är tagen vid ett arrangemang med GB-Glass i Stockholm för ett antal år sedan.

Ford A Pic Up 1930 with U.S. body and bed.
Imported many years ago by Netclassics from the U.S. with very good help from Doc Kalinka which is one of the foremost experts on USA.s A Ford. This car was worn out but for some unknown reason it did run perfectly.
The brakes were outstanding, felt like hydraulic brakes. The cabin is tight and the oil smell was noticeable but no problems with that when you have fun all the time when running with it.
Compare the two Pic Ups above and below you can see that they are quite different in structure. The bed shows big differences as the American car has a much smaller and lower platform (bed). The American cab was very unusual in Sweden as the import of cars with cab had much higher import charges than a chassis with just a torpedo and fenders + hood.
